Originally from Ohio, Bill has served United Methodist congregations in the Virginia Annual Conference (Springfield UMC, 1997-2002, Lincolnia UMC, 2002-2012 and Dranesville UMC 2012-Present) since his graduation from Duke Divinity School in May 1997. Prior to attending Duke, Bill served for 20 years as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
In addition to a Master of Divinity from Duke, Bill holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Naval Academy (1974), and a Master of Science from the Naval Postgraduate School (1990).
Bill and his wife Barbara (Candi) have one daughter, the Rev. Dr. Heather Lear, who is who is the Teaching and Research Fellow for the Foundation for Evangelism at Lake Junaluska, N.C. Hather, husband Casey, and son Caleb, make their home in Brentwood, Tennessee.
Candi is a graduate of the University of Maryland, with a dual degree in elementary and special education. For over 43 years, Candi has taught students from preschool to high school, including adult high school completion classes, in four states. She currently teaches second grade at West Springfield Elementary School.
Billʼs passions and perceived strengths are in the areas of teaching, spiritual guidance and evangelism. As a second-career pastor, he is especially motivated to take adults deeper in the Scriptures, teach about the Churchʼs history and the manner in which our beliefs developed. In the past few years, Bill has developed a great interest in practicing and teaching spiritual disciplines which have inspired and sustained believers for centuries.
